Old Books = Sketchbooks
After reading The Love Poems of John Keats - In Praise of Beauty - I opted to turn the book into a sketchbook art project. It's nice to have a book you can doodle and paint in with out worrying about the end results. It's ok if the drawing fails, or the color choice was wrong, it's a disposable experiment - a safe place to explore.
I have some pages that felt like total junk, but when you are less worried about the result you may come up with a new nice things. This was a fun place for me to mess around with watercolor and micron pens, and feels more special now than it did before.
Visit a thrift store and check out the cheap options for a book to pick up and turn into art! Also a great idea for a kids project, as long as you really set the rules that we don't draw in ALL books. It could open them up to the idea of experimenting with lots of different objects - that anything can get turned into art.
