Little Night | Nochecita
Yuri Morales tells the sweet story in English and Spanish of a celestial mother and child whom all mamas and babies can relate to. At the end of a long day Mother Sky bathes, dresses and feeds Little Night, who only wants to run away and play hide and seek. Little kids will love her sneaky playfulness, and be delighted by the magical images.
The illustrations are dreamy - Mother Sky pouring a bath of fallen stars, chasing her little one to put on a dress crocheted from clouds, feeding her pancakes and starry milk from the Milky Way. My daughter’s favorite is when the mother twists Nochecita’s hair into two small buns and uses planets for hair pins, before she is off to play moon ball.
Yuri Morales draws from her Mexican heritage to create her stories. She emigrated to the US in 1994, and learned English while reading children’s books with her son in public libraries. Inspired by what she saw, she bought art supplies and taught herself to illustrate. Since the she’s had several books published and won numerous awards, including a Caldecott Honor Award. She is so talented, hard working, and incredibly inspiring!
